Tink never ceases to amaze me. Many times while researching how to teach a learning disabled child I have run across a recommended method but for some reason have tossed aside the idea. One of the things that I read over and over is to teach them by associating something else with the words or the number or the sequence being studied. I have paid so little attention to this that I cant even tell you definitively what the method is.
But today a bell went off inside my brain when Tink said,"Mama, listen to me say the books of the Old Testament in order." I offhandedly said, "I'm listening," while I was still doing some computer research. She walks across my office and plops herself down at the piano. "Tink," I say, "I thought you were going to say the books of the OT to me."
"I am, mama, but I need the piano. It helps me remember."
Click went my brain. What is this? Somewhere I have read of this. I listened as she played the very first note on the keyboard and said, Genesis, then on to the next key saying Exodus. I was amazed. She indeed did say all the books of the Bible! She has been working on this in Awana since last fall. I have despaired of her ever learning it! But here she was plunking out the books on the piano.
Now let me say here that she has been taught the song with all the books named in it. It has been sung to her and with her every Thursday night for months but to no avail. How did she know that she could learn it if she associated a piano key and note with every book? She doesn't even know how to play a piano. I'm sure that's why she just went from the lowest note up.
Okay, back to the drawing board. Somewhere, sometime, I read about this approach. Its used a lot in multisensory schools and curriculum. Excuse me but this mom isn't the sharpest knife in the set. Now I must go back and research what my "learning disabled" child figured out on her own.
Where oh where did I read about this?

wow that's amazing, that's cool how many people can learn through unusual ways. Personally scripture memory verses help me when they are in a song. But yeah...sounds like you are definitely onto something.
Hmm, this is not quite hat you're after but might help give you some ideas:

Good luck - sounds like you're onto something here! :)
not quite WHAT rather than not quite hat. Plus possibly without that last slash on the address, my keyboard must be faulty.
Mrs D, it sounds like you are really onto something with Tink, I will be following any ideas you have with interest.

Good luck finding it!
You know I saw on a show like 60 minutes (perhaps it was another show) how some people see music in color, or have other interesting sensorial associations like smell with certain other areas of the brain.
Interesting. Keep us tuned.
Smart girls, that Tink.
Thats amazing and wtg Tink!
By the way,may I wish you and your family a Happy New Year!

Leave it to the kids to teach the adults.

Just coming by to wish one Oregon blogger a Happy New Year from another one! May your new year be full of love, laughter, peace, and happiness.
