The Pig Roast

Saturday we went to a family reunion at my brothers house. My brother, Scott, loves to roast pigs! It's his specialty. So we were treated to another roasted piggy. It's a little too close to the live form for me. I had just one bite and that was about all my stomach could handle.

I mean, people, look at the hair on this thing!

And here you have the Chef and the Farmer that raised the pig; all one and the same. It just seems wrong somehow. Poor Wilbur! I think I should have never watched Charlottes Web so recently! This is my brother, Scott, by the way. My brother, Ben is standing in the back holding his son in the red jacket.

Well let's move out across the yard and see what everyone else is doing. We are a family of bloggers. Would you like to meet a few? Here is my cousin, JD. He was the one responsible for getting the rest of us into blogging. He's also the only one that's made it big in the blogging industry; if blogging is an industry, that is. Jd blogs at Foldedspace and is the author and creator of the popular website Get Rich Slowly. Here he's trying to pick Italian plums growing high in the tree. Who says you need a ladder?

This is Jeff, another of my first cousins and a brother to JD. He blogs at Jethros World, and has adorable pics of his kids. Now let me tell you, this man has some CUTE children. You really must go take a look. Besides, he needs some traffic anyway. His blog is just like him; quiet and unassuming in its place in the blog world.

This is my sister, Valerie, and her husband Veasy. She's sitting on his lap but there was the tiniest gap between her buttons and she didn't want that shown on the internet so I cropped it. Now it looks like her husband is a short little fellow when in reality he's over 6', I believe. My sister blogs at Orchids and Laundry and you will see her comments on here under her blog name alltheveas. Thats because all her children's names start with V. Lets see if I can remember them all; there's Verlyn and Vance who blog at Benz Boyz, and Vonda (who also blogs but since she's under 18 I dont think I'll link to her blog), then Veldon, Vernell, Vaughn, Vivian, Veronica, and Vale. Yep, that's nine of them. You can tell her younger boys in these pics as they are the ones running around with the red and white striped T shirts. She dressed them alike which is charming in my opinion.

Here is Mr. Darling talking to my mother, another blogger. My mother blogs at Grammas Memories. Go over and take a look at all her pics. She's a professional photographer and also has pics up of some of the cakes she used to make in our family business. We did cakes, catering and flowers for weddings for something like 25 years. They sold the business and the old farm house about 5 years ago.

So now lets move around the yard and see what everyone is doing? The two women on the steps are my sis in laws. I have no idea what they are scowling about. Way back on the porch you can see my brother, Ben with his wife, Ruth. They are the ones with the two children on their laps. Ruth, blogs over at Stumpybabe. She is also a photographer and has wonderful pics up of her kids. Note the three ice cream buckets there on the porch by the table, churning out the home made icecream!

These are four of my nephews. The first three from left to right belong to my sister, Laurie. They own and operate a huge Dairy Farm in Washington. Laurie has 11 children. I guess she never got around to teaching this boy that we dont bounce balls in the house. (tee hee) The last boy on the right belongs to my sister, Valerie.

Here are two more of Valerie's children. Remember I said you'd know them by the red striped shirts? Thats my own little Peter, walking in the background. You will notice there are kids everywhere. Thats how it is at our reunions.

This is my cousin, Jeff, my husband, and my brother Ted.

I have 49 nieces and nephews. Here a bunch of those nieces at play.

And here is my very own little Tink, in the middle, and Baby Jane on the right.

Of course I have to put in this pic of Mr Darling and Tink, since they figure so largely in my life!

Here's another volley ball game in process.

Well I hope you enjoyed the pig roast with me. There's nothing left now but memories and bones!

What a fun post, Mrs. Darling! Thank you for the introduction to your family. I'll be checking out those blogs!

For many years we used a Mennonite curriculum, Rod and Staff, when we were homeschooling. I especially liked their reading curriculum, since it was all based on simplified Bible stories.

Looks like you all had a good time together!

Aren't reunions so much fun? Looks like you were all having such a good time.

I have to say, though, I'm with you on the piggy issue. I love roast pork, as long as it doesn't cook "whole hog" in front of me!

P.S. I see you use quite a bit of A Beka. That's mostly what we used, too.

I have a lot of catching up to do! You've been quite busy while I was on my 3 week vacation. I think I'll just have to work my way backwards!

The pig roast looked like a lot of fun! I wish we lived closer to our family so we could have get togethers more often. We had a reunion at the end of June with Dave's family and had a blast! If I were to get together with my father's side of the family, we'd have to rento out the SuperPit here at UNT!!! I am one of 9 kids and have a ton of nieces and nephews too! Tahnks for sharing the fun with all of us!

Oh such wonderful pictures. It must be so wonderful to have such a large family. I love seeing all the girls and women in dresses; typical Mennonite wear, right? Almost makes me want to join their church.

I think perhaps I am in the minority, because seeing that roast pig doesn't bother me one bit. But then I grew up with a family of hunters. When I was young even us kids hunted birds. Mom cleaned them up though. We just plucked the feathers.

Yum! My mouth is WATERING right now. Where I live, we call this a pig pickin' and it is DEEElicious. And I'm sure your family doesn't mind you only having a bite-- more for them!

dear Mrs. Darling,

If you had a second I was wondering if you might be able to share with me whether or not you have spoken with your 10 year old regarding her sensory disorder. Ellie, 7, has been struggling lately with not wanting to be different from other kids and I am wondering if explaining to her that she has Asperger's and telling her what exactly that is would be helpful. Do you have any input on this since you have an older child with similair struggles?

Thanks-
Jenny

We went to a Redneck party on Saturday and they roasted a whole pig too. The snout was still on it and there was a merichino cherry for an eye. :) We took some pictures and I will have to get them up, maybe tomorrow.

That's the way I want our family reunions to be when I'm a grandma. Lots and lots of kids everywhere. It looks like fun.

What fun it is to visit your family. I love the way you wrote the post. I smiled all the way through it. It's very nice to meet your family...and I don't think I would have been able to eat the piggy either. Was it on it's way to market?? Or was it the one that had roast beef? :-)

You had such fun! What a blessing to see them all in one place!!

Fabulous pig. My husband is now looking up how much a spit roast attachment for our BBQ would be! You have inspired him to want to cook a whole animal...

Oh no, other bear run as fast as you can in the other direction! LOL

I love pig roasts. We are near the N.C. border so we get N.C. style BBQ pig, so good with lots of vinegar.

Looks like you had a big time. Wonderful pictures, thanks for sharing. :)
