I love decorating my home. It's one of my passions. Most of my life Ive just decorated with easy, little things. Then one day, about 15 years ago I had a neighbor who had her house decorated so beautifully that I asked her what she thought was key to making a home look warm and inviting but still stylish and beautiful.
I never forgot what she told me. She said, "Mrs. Darling, you will never go wrong if you have books, plants, lamps, and pictures in all your living spaces." Since then I have been sure to make that happen.
When we were building an addition onto our house ten years ago I poured over home decorating books and was a religious viewer of Home and Garden TV. I got many great ideas from them. I went to paint stores and spent hours going through the samples and comparing all the colors on the color wheel. I consulted with interior decorators and pretty much just ate, lived and breathed home fashions for a while.
That was ten years ago but I have still not bought the pieces for my tables and walls that I would like. I did follow the books on painting and color and texture but now I want to begin getting those pieces that pull it all together. To that end I've been tuning into decorating shows and decorating blogs again.
Over on the HGTV website I was quite intrigued to find this list of the top 25 home decorating mistakes.
I thought I would share a couple of them with you.
No 1 they admit is controversial. It's fake flowers. Now I have fake flowers in my house and fake trees. I draw the line at plastic flowers. They look like stuff we use to find in grave yards after Memorial Day when we were kids. But to have real flowers around is just too expensive. In the summer I usually have a vase or two of cut flowers in the rooms because I grow my own. But I'm not paying for fresh flowers in the dead of winter. I remember Oprah saying that fresh flowers were a must and she received so much negative email from it that she did another show and told everyone she still stands by what she said but she thinks there are now lovely enough fake ones on the market that they would do if you couldn't afford the fresh. Well they will have to do in my house, that's all there is to it.
No 4 is fear of color. That is not me! I love color. I don't have a white wall in this house other than my husbands office and that's because he out his foot down! You have to be careful though when going with lots of color lest the house ends up looking like a circus gone bad. One rule of thumb is to use touches of a color you really like in every room to tie all the rooms together.
Then there's the mistake of pushed back furniture. Oh my word, this one gets me too. Pull that furniture out and quit lining the walls with it. Turn something on an angle or pull the couch into the room to help define the living space.
No 8 is pictures hung too high. Longer ago everyone hung there pictures way high. Today that is out! I still have very good friends and, ahem, relatives that hang their pictures too high. Hang those pics at eye level, it looks so much better.
Another mistake they have listed is floating rugs and rugs around the toilet. Remember the days when everyone had those matching toilet rugs; one for the floor that fit around the bowl, one for the lid and one for the tank lid! And then if you were really lucky old Aunt Lydia would crotchet you a toilet paper cover to tie it all in! It's totally laughable now. My 20's crowds that reads this probably wont relate but I bet anyone over 40 recalls those things. In fact, I had them in my own house for years! Ladies, they are so yesterday, as our youth would say! Now I cringe at the germs that must have been in those rugs. I love Clorox wipes and I swipe down my toilets almost every day. The kids are suppose to take them around the ring every time they go but just like flushing; sometimes it gets done and sometimes it doesn't.
As for floating rugs they break up the design and contour and flow of your room. Put the furniture on or around a large accent rug instead of throwng a dinky little thing in the middle of the room. Oooooorrrrrr; marry a procrastinator that never gets around to buying or approving the purchasing of a rug and there your rug troubles will end! Can you tell I have some issues!?
And then theres the mistake of too many photos. HGTV says that it is not in good taste to crowd a table top with photos. But I wonder about that. How many of you have noticed that royalty does that a lot. There are many pics of Princess Diana sitting in front of a side table that is loaded with nothing but photos. I personally don't do it but Ive always been intrigued by all the photos in frames at Highgrove. Don't I just sound like Ive been there now! Ive always been intrigued by all the photos in frames at Highgrove; like I notice them every time I walk in! Okay, so Ive never been there but I was and am an avid fan of her and I have picture after picture of her with her table of photos. So I'm guessing if Royalty can do it, so can you.
If you are into decorating you need to go take a peek at the website by HGTV. So now lets here your thoughts and confessions. Come on, I've admitted to my faux pas now its your turn.

LOL, I'm sooo with you on the toilet rugs etc! We still have one for around the toilet for in the dead of winter...hubby gets sooo cold.
I just wash it a lot!
I like a lot of photos, but DH does not..our walls are beige..not my choice. He also likes pictures hung way too high..sometimes I win that..sometimes not.
What was that about toilet rugs? so, what are you suppose to put in there?
I wash my carpet that goes around the toilet atleast twice a week----just b/c I have little boys.
Well I put a rug on the floor in the bathroom. The difference is that it goes in front of the sink or in the middle of the floor. If you have a small bathroom a rug in the middle will almost reach everything in the room but it will leave the base of the toilet free so there is no collection of germs. In a large bathroom you wouldnt just throw one in the middle of the floor because then you would be committing another mistake; that of floating rugs.
The suggestion of rugs other places in teh bathroom was also suggested by HGTV. So they're not saying no rugs, they're saying no toilet ringed rugs.
My mom had those little crocheted thingies when I was growing up!!! LOL
I loved this post, Mrs. D. Thanks for sharing your tips. Nate Berkus has a really great decorating book...a few of them actually.
OH my! We have never decorated this house...shh!!
lol
Not that our house has this but I've seen on tv that there are houses that have carpet in the toilets and bathrooms...?!? eewww
Okay, so when I read "some of my friends" my first thought was "is she talking about me?" Yes, I see that appraising eye when you walk in the door! But since you have a million other friends, I'll figure you're talking about them. AND hubbys not going to like this- you make me want to bring out the paint brush and rehang the pictures! And I promise to get rid of that bathroom rug. LoL
I would love to see pics of your house... do you have some up somewhere?
The picture you have on the post is GORGEOUS.
I have no trouble with color. I have 2 big red sofas in my living room, and buttery yellow walls. :)
One of those sofas is NOT on a wall, and I've wondered if it looks weird like that... does it look crowded? We don't have much wall space, you know how open the floor plans have been recently. Our house is about 8 years old. One thing I am thankful for is that we do not have soaring ceilings. I like my 10 ft ones (or whatever they are)... it feels cozier, and it stays warmer.
I have silk flowers, too. They seem to add warmth, but yes, I can see how they might be controversial. Sometimes I wonder, "does that look good - or tacky?" I tend to lose objectivity in my own home, with things I see everyday. For example, I do have pictures out and around, and candles, and greenery... but sometimes I think, "is it too cluttered looking?" Then I get a picture back, or I visit someone else's home, or I look at a book, and I think, "I've got to go buy some STUFF!!!" :)
Mostly I'd like more bookshelves and new lamps. I love light, and bookshelves definitely liven up a room, and if you have lots of shelves, it's fun to decorate on them. We have 2, and I would like flanking built-ins around the fireplace at some point. One thing at a time.
That was fun! I do have some pics in my archives, but I think things may have changed a bit since I took them... if you're interested.
I'm not sure I have any of the faux pas. I am a less is more and much better kind of person. As a result, we have very little in our home and virtually nothing on the walls.
I love watching HGTV. I always say that I could have a PhD for all the time I've invested in watching those shows. A PhD in HGTV. lol
pah. I don't believe in decorating do's and don'ts. Never have. You live in it, you decorate however you like it. Especially if you own the house. It's your castle! Your sanctuary! HGTV would be appalled at my place, but my friends like it, i like it, my husband likes it, so.. meh.. Nothing matches. lol! But i have a lot of neat stuff to look at, put and hung wherever, so when people come over, they spend all their time going around and looking at all my oddball stuff. Cast iron mortar and pestle, googie turquoise candy dish, cameras from the '10s and '20s, my photographs and art, weird books, a trashcan that looks like a Tomato soup can from the 60s (my dads), signed Paul Conrad cartoon, CIA Glomar Explorer insignia poster, RAF "pub" clock... just weird stuff all over the place. I hang up art that my friends give me, too. I have a lamp made from two pistons from a 327 Chevy engine with a valve guide for a pull, a cast aluminum candy dish and weird light up thing with glass in it my dad made. And framed some of the weirder flyers from when I was in a band on the coast that i designed. My place says "Pril and her Smart Half live here"! My furniture is whatever I can afford when I notice we need something "new", usually straight from Goodwill. lol!
Well pril you know that mismatched stuff is all the rage. In fact decorating in all one color theme is one of HGTV's big no no's. Sp see your in! By The way , I ddint know you still read thsi blog. I see you kn JD's site now and gain but Im glad to see you still check in on lowly me!
Oh forgot about Jennifers question. Yes Jennifer I do have oic of my house. They are on the sidebar under the label pics of my house! LOL
I saw that same top 25 decorating mistakes program several months ago ... I gasped when the NO to artificial flowers was number one as I had just purchased a few "silk" geranium plants that just don't grow here in the dead of winter ... I do prefer more neutral tones on the walls and to have pops of color or artwork ... If you watch enough of the shows of people getting ready to sell their homes ... the number one thing they do is neutralize the walls to make it more appealing to the mass. My biggest decorating mistake once was tiling our bathroom floors with peach tile (one with blueish gray grout and the other with seafoam green grout). I was forever stuck with using those colors in the bathrooms. Currently we're in the pulling it all together mode with our new home. I've been buying artwork and getting our walls 'furnished' before hubby retires in May and I won't have the budget to buy art.
Hey now, ain't nothing wrong with covering up a neked toliet with some pink fuzzies, and matching rugs.
You can send me Aunt Lydia's crocheted pig and tissue cover.
I'm doing one room at a time in my house. Hubby just gave me the go ahead today to get the paint for the hall.YEAH! I'll be looking for hours to see what will work.
I don't do a lot of pictures on the walls. Hubby kept the walls of our apartment covered in pictures. So when we got the house I begged him not to put up all the pictures. I was so glad when he said ok.
I just want everyone to walk in and say very nice. More important. I want the family happy!
Great post!
We too have bathroom rugs :) - but we wash them really often. And they match the shower curtains (does that make it better ;)?).
I love decorating with fresh flowers. Fortunately here in Germany fresh flowers are rather cheap.
My DH quite enjoys decorating rooms. He has really good taste and we like similar things, so we have tons of fun choosing decorating pieces, curtains and furniture.
Decorating faux pas, where do I begin? Is it the fact that I actually have a husband who wants input into household decorating? Yup, that's where it all starts!
He has an enormous collection of antique Colorado Milk Bottles. Thus they are displayed in every nook & cranny as well as available wall space for putting up a shelf! Sometimes I think my house is like those cluttered booths at the antique mall. You now the ones you just walk right past because you don't know where to begin looking? That's my house!
He is a wonderful photographer and we have a lot of his work framed and on the walss. I don't mind these one little bit though!
I like color on the walls. He feels white makes the rooms look bigger. Everytime I would say something about painting he'd get that funny look on his face. I finally told him that he should know me by now and that I wouldn't do anything to make our home look like the carnival fun house. Then I discovered it's better to just do it and not give him any time to get all anxious about it.
The most daring thing I've done is paint the hallway (which you get a small glimpse of from the living room), an eggplant color. It accents the leather furniture in the living room nicely and I have 2 cheap white bookcases againt the wall.
Since we live in a double-wide there's a premium on space. I would love to move the sofa away from the wall but with it facing the big screen TV, any closer and my eyes might bug out! The other thing is that the surround sound system for the afore mentioned TV has wires going up the wall in plain view. YUCK!
If these things are the biggest "issues" I have with my beloved, it's pretty small potatoes!
Connie
PS Thanks for stopping by and voicing your opinion on the contest! I was sure that "dead squirrel" photo was a shoo in!
I saw that SHOW!!
I couldn't wait to see number one on the don't do and when it was FAKE FLOWERS I nearly threw something at the t.v......come on....
I LOVE my flowers...granted I'm particular about them looking real or rustic...
I have a rug in the bathroom...all of them...but no toilet covers....to grammy for me...but eventually I may!!
great post to wake up to!!
Oh and the forecast says....FREEZING RAIN over here...imagine that...
could turn to the white stuff if the Lord is in the mood!!
have a great one Mrs. Darling...
Did you know the bathrooms in Japan are only a toilet. The water runs up the back lid and that is where you wash your hands. The sink is in a separate area, often the laundry room.
Trust me, I live in Japan---with a Japanese toilet. Brings new meaning to the toilet room, doesn;t it?
My problem is, to quote Aladdin, "Itty bitty living space"... and way too much stuff. I have this lovely upright grand piano. And a computer and a copier and two book shelves and a tv and a fireplace that is in the weirdest of places in the house. *Sigh*
Teach me o wise one!!
Maybe I could pull the couch out at an angle -- but where would I put the rest of the stuff?? *Sigh*
I promise, my next house will look better!!!
I enjoyed your commentary on the HGTV decorating mistakes! I did a post on that awhile back and it was fun to read everyone's comments.
Thanks for sharing such great posts!
Melissa
I just love seeing photos of your home and how you decorate. You have wonderful taste. Also enjoyed the stories your dad told!
Peggy these photos are not of my home. I wish they were. My pics are on the side bar under pics of my house.
This is the first home we've had that we could decorate, and I was soooo tired of apartment beige walls, so I was determined not to have any blah rooms in the house. I think I went overboard, though - I painted my kitchen liberty blue, which looked great on the chip card, but it is so dark! I've recently bought another bucket of paint - yep, a beige-ish color (but NOT apartment beige!) - and I'm going to put that on the walls and maybe do an accent wall. I would love to paint the kitchen a cheery soft yellow, but hubby hates yellow, so that's out of the question.
We finally have a house where we can float the furniture, and I'm loving it! No more walls for our couch, thank you very much... but FYI, my very good friend is an interior designer and she has her couch against the wall!!! I didn't know she made such mistakes. :-)
And a helpful hint she told me about, which I didn't know but is actually fairly accurate - when you are decorating with items, use odd numbers because it balances better. So if you are putting in, let's say, pendant lights over a bar, use 3 or 5 instead of 2 or 4. Or if you have a collection on shelf use 5 or 7, not 4 or 6, so it flows better. I've implemented it since she told me that, and it really does look so much nicer!
Laura that rule of going by odd numbers is an old tried and true trick. It also works for landscaping and flower beds. I use that rule all the time.
Oooooooooooooooo... Thanks for sharing this! Right now, I am at a place where I 'don't know what my style is'! Have ya ever been there? Maybe if I jot over to HBTV I'll figure it out!
~Christina
P.S. WHat is your style? Victorian, regal, earthy, warm, cold, cottagey, celtic, woodsy, etc. Hmmmmm? I want to know! LOL
I definitely use warm colors throughout my home. My walls are red, yellow, briny green, and taupe. Guest rooms are shades of blue and lavender that blend with the yellow walls in the hall.
My kitchen is classic, but I would say the rest of my house is more...well.. not country... maybe just typical suburbia. Is that a style?
The wood stove in the main living room combined with dark wood floor does make it feel kind of earthy.
So... be careful with the eye-level trick. I hung all of our pictures at eye level... for me... and I'm 5'1. So, everyone else in the world (and more importantly, my husband) can't see their head in my mirrors and wonders why everything is hung so low.
I'm going to have to fix that one of these days. Well, we're moving soon so maybe at our next place.
Just a tip... the eye level thing is aimed at people 5'5 and above. Lol!
Thanks for the great post! We watched the special too...great fun! You have a wonderful blog!
smiles, kari & kijsa
Emily that is so true. I am 5'4" so I never have any trouble hanging things eye level. Theres other things to go by though; one is to use furniture to anchor the look on the walls. Hang mirrors and photos and such 6 to 9 inches above couches and sidebars and you should be okay too.
LOL about toilet rugs!!!! I also second everything that you wrote - I love me some color on the walls and I get irked when carpets don't have furniture touching them (lovely ILs are guilty of that, haha!). Really enjoyed this post!
P.S. I have loads of ideas written down from design sites and HGTV that still haven't all been implemented either. :o)
I just finished redecorating our guest bath. My faux pas are usually related to too much...too much color...to many pictures...to many pieces of furniture, etc. My house is an old parsonage and was originally a remodel of a body shop! So...it is tough at times. The worst (hardest) room to decorate is the family/dining room. The door is in the wrong spot. The traffic pattern goes through the center. There is a wonderfully functional fireplace there.
So, our guest bathroom this time is calm with not so much color. Only one color on the wall (It's been FOREVER since I've done that) and one basic accent color for contrast. So glad to see that I'm "with it" -- one small rug in front of the sink. :)
I reviewed the pics of your home...love the room with the leather chairs AND your kitchen is a marvel!!
