The temps remain in the 90's. The kids remain in the pool. I remain in the garden. And so goes the summer. I picked another 2 gallons of blueberries off my bushes yesterday. I have at lest another gallon to pick this morning. After this mornings picking I'll have about 40 pounds of blueberries and Im only in the middle of the harvest.
Yesterday I opened the box of school curriculum that had come in the mail and it was the most exciting thing I had seen in a coons age. I cannot wait to get back into the school year. September cant come fast enough.
Tuesday after Peter had Little league I took the kids to the school for the summer free lunch program. A couple of my girlfriends were going so I decided to join them. That is such a great program for kids. I think its wonderful but the food is very mediocre. It felt a little weird to be there. It was funny thing because in the car on the way home Tink said that she didnt want to eat there again because it made her feel poor. I think that may have been what I was feeling on top of the feeling that my kids were stealing food from kids who really needed it. Why I should feel that way I dont know because there were only about five other kids down there eating.
But anyway I say all that to say this. A little lunch at the local school gave me a huge perspective on my own children and the blessings that are theirs this summer and always. While they are eating form natures bounty and enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables, home made breads and jams, thick slices of Tillamook cheese and tall glasses of milk other children are just not eating that well. It sort of humbles one to think about it.
We're busy getting ready for our vacation. Hubby needs me in the garden now to help him lay some pipe for the watering system. Tonight we're going to a concert out by the coast. It's just going to be a hugely busy day. I canned another canner full of pickles from my garden yesterday giving me 14 pint of sweet pickles now.
I need to clean out the car and vacuum it while the morning is cool. Last minute packing needs done and the day awaits.Gotta go. Im out of time!

I can probably see why you and Tink felt like that. It is nice that kind of stuff is offered though.
Probably a good idea to use the free lunch program so that they keep it open. They may close the ones that aren't used by enough people, which leaves the few that really need it without lunch.
I hope you have fun this evening. Laying pipe for a watering system seems like a very good idea. I can't believe how little rain there has been.
You are my blueberry growing inspiration. We are renting our house again this year but hope to be on our " homestead" perhaps next year. Berries and chickens will be my top priority. We are growing a lot of greens and kale which we eat everyday.
Very intuitive of Tink.
Institutionalized food isn't that great. My youngest went away to college this summer and HATES the food. He's used to homemade everything. There the feed them powdered mashed potatoes and other chemical concoctions. His acne has flared up so badly that I'm driving 4 hours up there to pick him up after class. Then we'll drive 4 hours back to go to the derm dr. Then I'll drive him 4 hours back and drive home again. Yikes!
I love being a homemaker and making nutritious food from scratch. What is scratch BTW. Hahaha.
I so love blueberries...on EVERYTHING. In my cereal, oatmeal cottage cheese and whatever else I can't think of. The antioxidants are great. We're moving to a 2 acre lot soon and I am definitely going to grown some.
I love hearing about your garden. All those blueberries. :)
I think it's good you took your kids to the freen lunch program. It is a good reminder of all that they have & all you do for them.
I mirror this sentiment about free lunch summer. I refuse to go. I have a friend who's husband makes a lot of money and they are quite comfortable and she takes her kids there nearly everyday. My judgmental side pops out and thinks of the hungry kids in our city who could use that meal. We have a HUGE amount of hungry, poor families in our city and I am so glad the free lunches are there for the children who might not get that meal. So I do my part and I don't take my kids.
I have homeschool materials coming in the mail here and there too! It is thrilling! I've got a couple subjects all planned for my 13 year old already! :)
